Music Studio

To us, Industrial mountain homes can look very different, but the style is distinguished by blending raw, utilitarian factory elements with rugged alpine architecture. The design is honest about how the home is built, showing off its steel, stone, and wood instead of hiding them behind finishes. This style takes cues from buildings that were built to work rather than to impress, like barns, factories, and mountain lodges. In this design style you may see exposed metal roofing and beams, rough cut stone, or raw wood, often combined within the same home. What makes it feel modern is how little is added just for decoration. Nothing is there to impress for its own sake, and nothing is covered up just to look softer.

This particular home carries a story of its own. Its owners have a lifelong connection to aviation, and that history became the driving inspiration behind the design, shaping everything from the roofline to the name of the property itself: Industrial Mountain. This home, currently under construction, will bring these ideals to life.

Exterior-Interior Connection

Every decision about where this home sits on its lot was made with the view in mind. The home is oriented to pull the Blue Ridge Mountains into its most important rooms, and a deck stretches off the back of the house to carry that view even further outside. At the front, the home keeps one long, low silhouette that settles it into the hillside rather than perching above it.

That silhouette carries the owners' aviation story forward. The home's large cantilevered roofs are drawn directly from the lines of an airplane wing, and the industrial geometry of aircraft hangars became another guiding reference for the design. The center entrance continues that story and is named the “Control Tower”, marking the point where the home's two wings meet and setting the tone for everything that follows. The same materials that ground the home on the outside carry straight through to the inside without interruption, so stepping through the front door feels less like entering a different space and more like continuing through the same one. That continuity is what keeps the design honest to itself.

The Music Studio: An Extension of the Home

In initial conversations, our client shared his passion for music and that he was in a band that practiced and performed regularly. We designed a custom music studio that is its own structure separate from the main house, and named it “The Hangar” as another nod to the owners' aviation roots. This space will utilize the same natural and rugged materials found throughout the main home, so that it reads as a continuation of the property rather than an addition to it.

The home and the Hangar face each other with their wing-shaped roofs pointing toward one another, forming a courtyard between them that we call the Parade Grounds. The effect is a space that feels like it belongs on the land with the home rather than an afterthought, and a layout that turns the client's personal story into the very shape of the property. It is this kind of intentional, symbolic design that gives our clients a reason to fall in love with their home, and the studio will provide our client a special place to be creative and build many memories for years to come.

Their experience, advice, and recommendations were priceless. Their model allows you to see what your house will look like before you begin construction. The Pillar & Perch architects were outstanding in leading us through their entire process starting with visiting our property to site the potential location of our home, to providing style and design alternatives and floor plan layouts to maximize the mountain views, and ultimately recommending and selecting finishes that are aesthetically appealing and work together to create the look and feel we hoped to capture in this beautiful mountain setting.”
