The Site
The Blue Ridge Mountains reward those who plan for them. They become a permanent presence in daily life with the right orientation and the large walls of glass that Modern Farmhouse design utilizes.
Our first design decision on this project was orientation. We wanted the home to be positioned so that the most-used spaces: the great room, the primary suite, the kitchen, faced the landscape with intention. Every window placement was considered not just for light, but for the vistas it would frame. The result is a home where the view is never by accident. Creating a longer plan allows more rooms to have views - a lot of our projects are long and narrow to allow more rooms to have great views. Some spaces are even one room deep and have views out front, back and side.
Modern Farmhouse Architecture
The Modern Farmhouse design incorporates distinct identifiers: a steep gable roof, natural materials, rustic elements like shiplap walls and reclaimed wood, large black-framed windows that build a connection to the outdoors. Blended together it creates something both modern and yet rooted in the farmhouse tradition.
The living room's gable-end glass wall standing 17’ high is perhaps the home's defining architectural feature: a floor-to-ceiling triangular glass window that mirrors the roofline itself. From inside, it frames the fields and mountains like a painting. From outside, it announces that this home takes the view seriously. From the common areas, a floating glass staircase wraps the fireplace and is one of the home's most distinctive design moments. It draws the eye upward while pulling you downward, connecting the common areas to a lower level built around fun. A custom wine room, gaming areas, and dedicated spaces for leisure make this floor as intentional as any other. The vision for this home was never just about the view. It was also about building a life worth coming home to at every level.
